Road and highway administrators are confronted with an increasing need for information regarding the status of existing infrastructure—from pavement shape and status to walkways, guard rails, rumble strips, pavement markings, signs, poles, and bridges. To meet these needs, GIE Technologies has designed the Image Capture System, a vision system that uses high-resolution 1600 × 1200 Point Grey Scorpion cameras to provide a user-friendly approach to installation and use. The design has three main objectives: high-resolution; high-quality images at highway speed by controlling exposure value and shutter, precise positioning, and various triggering intervals through independent triggering channels; and various image formats at the same high resolution. Download Technical Application Note: Factors to consider with multiple camera arrays
Greater computing power, an increase in availability of high quality megapixel image sensors, advances in FPGA design and electronics miniaturization, and an overall decrease in component costs are opening new opportunities in machine vision. Customers, meanwhile, want more pixels at faster frame rates, superior reliability, and a migration path for future retrofits. Using a real-world example, this article, published by the 1394TA in a recent edition of NewsFlash, highlights some of the factors to consider when selecting the right digital interface. Read more...

Board-Level Multiple Camera Arrays for OEM Applications
Many high-speed, compact vision systems, such as 3D scanners, object and gesture tracking systems, and multi-touch displays, require multiple cameras acquiring and streaming synchronized images simultaneously from different viewpoints. In addition, the cameras and supporting components often must fit in a tight space, be placed in a unique position, or mounted within a custom enclosure. This Technical Application Note describes some of the factors to consider and the specifics of how to construct a flexible, ultra-compact, multiple camera digital imaging system using an array of eight Firefly MV IEEE 1394a cameras, a custom Point Grey 6-port board-level 1394a hub, and third-party custom cables. Linux Software Support for USB 2.0 Cameras
The libdc community has integrated support for Point Grey Chameleon and Firefly MV USB 2.0 cameras in their latest libdc1394 SVN repository. This is made possible by the fact that unlike most other USB camera manufacturers who use a proprietary camera control protocol, Point Grey USB cameras implement the IIDC v1.31 standard, which was historically only used for 1394-based cameras.
Point Grey will also be introducing FlyCapture 2.0, the next generation of the popular FlyCapture image acquisition library. It provides users
with the same interface and C/C++ API for both Windows and Linux, supports multiple camera interfaces, allows users to develop applications using common programming languages, and provides ActiveX, TWAIN, and DirectShow interfaces.
