Grasshopper IEEE-1394b Camera

Point Grey announced the introduction of the Grasshopper line of IEEE-1394b (FireWire) cameras on June 12th, at the International Robots and Vision Show in Chicago, Illinois.

The Grasshopper digital camera offers high megapixel resolution and an ultra fast IEEE-1394b 800Mb/s digital interface. Attractive pricing makes these powerful cameras ideal for OEMs and system integrators who need compact systems that deliver 1.4M, 2.0M or 5.0M images at high frame rates. The Grasshopper cameras are particularly effective in demanding imaging applications such as those used in electronics manufacturing, life sciences and microscopy, surveillance and security, and ITS.

"A deep understanding of the machine vision and inspection industries was key in designing the hardware platform for the Grasshopper," said Vlad Tucakov, Director, Point Grey Research."The Grasshopper line features a wide variety of high resolution, large format image sensors—including the new Sony® ICX625 dual-output 5MP CCD—with the same compact form factor. We chose a 1394b interface because it delivers the best functionality for integrators, manufacturers, and analog users switching to digital, while allowing us to maintain an extremely competitive price point."

Monochrome and color CCD sensor options for the Grasshopper include the 1.4MP 2/3” ICX285 (1384x1036 at 17 FPS) and 2.0MP 1/1.8” ICX274 (1624x1224 at 30 FPS). A 5.0MP 2/3” ICX625 (2448x2048 at 15 FPS) model will be released mid-2007. Each model is available in a compact 44x29x58mm form factor with dual IEEE-1394b ports, general purpose I/O connector, and industry standard C-mount lens holder.

Key features of the Grasshopper camera include a frame buffer for image storage and retransmission, high-speed 14-bit analog-to-digital converter for data precision, memory channels for defining custom power-up settings, gamma and programmable LUT, and a data flash for non-volatile memory storage. Other standard features include multiple trigger and strobe modes, regions of interest and pixel binning, and in-field-updatable FPGA that controls all camera functions.

Like all Point Grey cameras, the Grasshopper complies with the IIDC DCAM v1.31 specification, which allows it to be used with many third-party software packages, such as those from Cognex®, Matrox®, MVTec and National Instruments®. Also included with every camera is the FlyCapture® SDK—a full software package for image acquisition and advanced camera control—and the PGRPRO driver, which enables users to grab images at full 800Mb/s transfer rates.

The following models are available from Point Grey Research and its network of distributors:

  • GRAS-50S5M/C (5.0MP 2/3” ICX625 mono/color CCD) (coming soon!)
  • GRAS-20S4C (2.0MP 1/1.8” ICX274 color CCD)
