One of the goals of a planetary imaging system is to capture the planet when the "seeing" is clear. A few years ago, it was discovered that capturing a video stream of the planet showed the seeing cleared up momentarily at various intervals of the video stream. Software was quickly utilized to break the video file up into frames. Each clear frame would then be stacked to build the signal up. Inexpensive webcams were initially used, but the need for faster frame rates and lower noise drove planetary imagers to higher end digital cameras, such as the Point Grey Flea2.

Coming Soon: FirePRO™ LDR
Using a Gigabit Ethernet physical layer to transport FireWire data using GigE signalling, the FirePRO LDR (Long Distance Repeater) can be used to transmit and receive 1394b 800 Mb/s data over 100 meters of standard Category 5 (Cat5) cable. This allows users to construct a reliable, high-speed FireWire-based network of multiple cameras that is physically separated by up to 100 meters from the host system. The FirePRO LDR will be demonstrated for the first time in Point Grey's booth at VISION 2008.
