It is often useful to know how to convert from the gain units presented by the API to real world values. This article details how this conversion is made.

The Firefly and Firefly2 are designed around the Texas Instruments TLV990PFB chipset, which provides users with a gain range from -0dB to +36dB. For more information on this chipset, consult the TI datasheet chipset datasheet at http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/slas282/slas282.pdf.

Unfortunately, the TLV990PFB datasheet does not provide a gain conversion formula to convert the whole number gain units (as displayed in the PGR FlyCap program) to real-world dB values. However, PGR has determined that each gain unit (0 – 255) represents approximately 0.14 dB of Gain. This is derived from the following assumption:

36 dB/255 steps = 0.14dB/step

Therefore a linear approximation of the equation would be:

Gain (dB) = (36/255) * x

where x = the number of steps.
