April 3, 2001 - "Many people think a color image is superior," reports President Rod Barman from PGR's headquarters in Vancouver, Canada. “In fact, monochrome cameras have higher resolution, a better signal-to-noise ratio, greater contrast and more light-sensitivity than similarly priced color cameras"
The complete monochrome FireFly kit consists of a 2"x2" camera, plug and play 6-pin IEEE-1394 PCI interface card, 4.5 meter IEEE-1394 cable, FireFly driver software, and an image acquisition software library that allows users to select and access images from any camera on the IEEE-1394 bus. Three lenses of 4mm, 6mm and 8mm focal lengths and a tripod mounting bracket are also included.
The FireFly camera is designed around Sony's 1/3" HAD 640x480 progressive scan CCD, which delivers superior performance to the more common ¼" CCD cameras on the market. FireFly streams VGA quality images at 30 FPS without compression, and meets the v1.04 digital camera standard. The system requires an Intel Pentium II or better processor, and Windows 98SE or Windows 2000.
"A black and white camera is particularly well-suited for industrial applications," said Barman. "Color costs more, requires more processing time, and doesn't yield significantly more information about the subject matter. Our customers can be reassured that we are committed to providing FireFly on a continuing, long-term basis."
The color FireFly camera debuted six months ago at the Vision Show in San Jose, CA. The new monochrome FireFly kit, with one-year limited warranty and one-year technical support, ships for $595 US. Volume discounts are available.
