Bumblebee — the Newest Buzzword in Stereo Vision

July 22, 2002 - Bumblebee’s full development kit includes camera head, interface card, device driver, image acquisition software, Triclops library, user manuals, and one-year technical support. All application software is supplied for download at no cost.

Point Grey Research Inc. is a product engineering and technology company founded in 1997. The company designs and develops 3D stereoscopic computer vision technologies The computer vision industry will soon be buzzing about the Bumblebee, Point Grey Research’s latest addition to their array of high-quality stereo vision cameras being unveiled at the Siggraph 2002 show in San Antonio, Texas. The compact, two lens digital camera combines 3D data quality with fast processing speeds—at a very affordable price.

“The camera is ideal for applications such as people tracking, gesture recognition, and mobile robotics,” says Vladimir Tucakov of Point Grey. “It can also be used to acquire quality stereo images for 3D viewing.”

The Bumblebee is portable, extremely easy to use and works “right out of the box.” It is pre-calibrated for lens distortions and camera misalignments and, since it is guaranteed to stay that way, no in-field calibration is required. All Bumblebee cameras use the same Firewire bus, which allows inter-camera synchronization and precise registration of images in time and space. This is particularly important when acquiring 3D data from multiple points of view.

The Bumblebee is compatible with the Triclops library and works with all of Point Grey’s application level software, including Censys3D people tracking SDK and Multiclops inter-camera calibration system. for commercial applications, including people and object tracking, virtual reality modelling, human-machine interfacing, and mobile robotics for a wide range of industries worldwide.
