Scorpion Bites into Boxed FireWire Camera Niche

November 19, 2002 - At this week’s Vision Show West November 19 – 21 in Santa Clara, California, Point Grey Research (PGR) releases the Scorpion—their highest resolution, fastest data rate camera ever. And this is one critter that is sure to cause a commotion even inside its box. PGR’s first “boxed” firewire camera produces 1280 x 1024 images at 30 frames per second, using the maximum available bus bandwidth while maintaining data integrity.

“I believe the 39 MB/sec produced by the Scorpion is the highest data rate IEEE-1394 camera out there,” says PGR’s Vladimir Tucakov. “While the Firefly and Dragonfly are board level cameras, intended for OEM applications, the Scorpion moves PGR closer to finished digital camera products.”

The Scorpion uses Symagery’s progressive scan CMOS sensor (VCA1281M), which uses on-chip double sampling to enhance image quality and performance and minimize fixed pattern noise. The camera works with PGR’s existing image acquisition and control software, allowing users to control peripherals such as lighting, actuators, focus, zoom, and camera parameters, such as CCD integration time and gain. “Existing customers will be able to port their software to this camera very easily,” notes Tucakov.

Compact, versatile and adaptable, the Scorpion supports four types of general-purpose input/output. The external trigger output synchronizes the image with an external event. The shutter start output allows synchronization of external events at the start of image acquisition (such as strobe or flash), and general digital input and output for communication with external devices. The camera also has a standard four-pin serial port that can be controlled through the IEEE-1394 interface.

Applications include machine vision, barcode/matrix readers, auto ID, intelligent surveillance, video conferencing, secure entry systems, biometrics, and robotic vision systems. The Scorpion can also be purchased in board form in higher quantities, and registered users can download the latest firmware and features from PGR’s support web site.
