May 16, 2005 - The Ladybug2 is next generation technology that enables a simultaneous 360ª, real time views at up to 30 frames per second.
Speaking about the important advances in the Ladybug2, Vlad Tucakov, Director of Point Grey Research commented: “The Ladybug2 is an enhanced re-design of our industry leading Ladybug spherical video camera. It features a full 30 fps frame rate and totally eliminates the need for a storage unit to capture video, offering added functionality at a more affordable price.”
The Ladybug2 delivers spherical views at up to 30 fps via a 1394b (800 Mpbs) interface to a PC for display and recording. The unique Camera Head Unit contains six 1024x768 color CCD sensors providing a view of over 75% of a sphere about the camera. Each 4.7 MPixel “frame” is transmitted uncompressed via fiber optic cable to the Ladybug2 Compressor Unit. The Compressor Unit converts the raw Bayer tiled images to color and provides a high-speed 1394b interface to the computer. The Compressor Unit can maintain 30 fps with real-time JPEG compression or 15 fps uncompressed to the computer. Before the Ladybug2 images are sent to the PC, they can also be JPEG compressed, giving users the ability to choose between higher image quality and faster frame rates.
“Our first generation Ladybug proved to be an invaluable tool for the entertainment and monitoring industries. Now with Ladybug2, users can stream real time spherical video directly to their PC for storage or display. They can see a panoramic view or an interactive virtual view complete with pan, tilt, and zoom. As well, they see the view from any of the individual cameras. It’s this kind of innovation and flexibility that our products are known for.” The Ladybug2 utilizes Point Grey Research’s proven Camera Head Unit design that minimizes parallax by tightly packing the CCDs and lenses. The Ladybug2 software development kit (SDK) enables users to control the camera settings, acquire images, and produce spherical and panoramic images. The SDK includes example programs, with source code, that highlight the functionality of the system. The Ladybug2 will be available in June.
